Night Shift

While my world sleeps
and the solitude of night
comes crashing in bringing thoughts
which fly around on strings
suspending kites of imagery's
that battle for their place
in mid-flight streams

The tug-o-war
of what was, what is,
and what might be pushes away
the possibility of sweet sleep
I wonder, will I ever rest?
I close my eyes so tight
but all I see on the curtain of my eyes
are the floating ghost
that look like bright lights

The intensity of these lights
grow brighter and brighter
until there is no room for the dark
which brings me sleep
all I see is the brightest white
I open my eyes and rise
from this nocturnal plight
I sit with pen in hand
and begin to write

Who else in my world is awake
can I call them and speak
to a comforting voice
if their awake
are they reading, writing, or watching TV
maybe I might wake them
from their pleasant sleep
NO, this is for me alone
these sleepless nights are my fight

Hours pass on streams
of uncaught dreams
so I continue to write
in hope to find slumbers delight
but all I do is write and write
not seeing an end in sight

I think,
where does it say
that sleep must only be done at night
what I know is this;
night is when I love to write
in the quiet solitude with the dark
just outside
that is when to me
it feels so right

I'm 56, i discovered it a long time ago. and fell in love with it, that's why I can't live no where else but in NYC.
this was, remembering why I love to write it night, because after all it's how I live
thank you so much for your comment, I'm happy you enjoyed it!

Love the imagery here and the honest approach to your writing. You held my attention throughout the poem'
I thought of my mother and son - both of which have problems sleeping. It's nice to make use of the time and there is a certain clarity about night time thoughts.

I enjoyed this stanza

comes crashing in bringing thoughts
which fly around on strings
suspending kites of imagery's
that battle for their place
in mid-flight streams

but the whole poem was wonderful.

we agree on two things, first if your up at night you might as well be productive, and second that's my favorite verse too. it's the way when we lay in our bed's thought's just fly around and we pull them down like on a string then let that one fly and pull another.
thanks for the "wonderful"

I value all constructive critic, so please feel free to voice your opinion. This is the land of the free poet's, and a workshop. Anything that will help with my writing I except. just read (why I like Neopoet).
to the issue at hand yes I think in this case you might be right, but if you read my earlier poems. before the site went down , You will see I was working on just that. it seem that when I write (and it's not intentional I rhyme) it comes out of my head that way. I was thought to just write and not try and think to much just let it flow and make correction later,.
I do see you point, it does become like a childs poem. that's my opinion.
thanks so very much for pointing it out, and if in the future you see something, please feel free to voice your opinion, again if it helps I am the first to accept.

then what are you waiting for, NY is here and not going anywhere, it's you that has to make the move from the wrong country. there no such thing as lost touch if we reach out touch is never loss. today we are just an internet connection away, our world has become small. just think of this, here I am talking to you from NY as if you were sitting here with me and it only takes seconds. WOW!!

I guess at one point or another we all see the floating light ghosts. sometimes it's darker in my bedroom then it is behind my eye lids, so i lay there with my eyes open till i fall asleep not knowing when my eyes closed or if they did at all
thanks for the"Excellent and full of wonderful imagery"

This verse really stood out for me. I too enjoy writing late at night. But lately have been sleeping my nights away. And I'm glad if this because I still have much healing to do since I died on September 13th and was revived. You put great energy into this write and it was a joy to read. I read in your bio that you like dark poetry, so perhaps you would like some of my "Eddy Styx" pieces.

my long time friend, i truly hope your feeling better thats a little frighting. yes after an experence like that I would be truly afraid to sleep, but we do need to recoup, and sleep is the stone on which we become sharp.
i'm sorry to hear that, but i am happy to have you here with us still buddy!
thanks for your wonderful comment. i've always loved your dark poetry, you are one of my favorites
