Family Tree

I can feel the rhythm of my pain

It resides deep within my brain

I wish that I could set it free

It stems from my family tree

My Mom, she was a little insane

She passed to me all of her pain

My Dad, he was humble and meek

Never much did he ever speak

One of my brothers was a big shot

Always talked about what he had got

My other brother found a way to ease his pain

He was always drunk and high on cocaine

My little sister, she died when she was five

I am the only one who recalls she was once alive

I know my faults, and they are so many

There is no one I know who hasn't got any

I know that my pain is inherently so

I will take it to my grave when I soon go

The struggles of mental illness and addiction within the family unit is so difficult. I do believe some tendencies are inherited. I also believe we learn or develop behaviors. I’m sorry to hear of the tragic loss of your sister. That must have been incredibly difficult on you and your family. I’m glad you’ve got writing to help. Showing your vulnerability is a very good means of coming to terms with yourself on a great many internal struggles.

It’s a sad poem but it’s a very good poem,

Good morning,
I am always impressed with the simplicity of your poetry, your direct, easy style, the way you choose the exact words for clarity - and you do it all in rhyme without stretching logic or meaning. I, too, am glad you have your writing. It benefits you, and all who read it.
Thank you,
