EARTH

I am the gentle wind of spring
blowing through the ancient trees
caressing grass where field larks sing
in winter bringing weeds to their knees.

I am the squirrel twitching its tail
nervous since its day of birth.
always alert without fail
yet I play in tree tops far from the earth.

I am a deer in early morning
returning to its day time bed
prepared to snort out its shrill warning,
the buck whose antlers have been shed.

I am the duff beneath your feet
the summation of all the leaf falls
scruffy, varied and un-neat
giving cover to all bugs which crawl.

I am the snake, I am the fish
I am the tree , I am the flower
I am anything you wish
I am nature and all its power.

I am death , all it entails
I am life with all its fails
I Am...............

Geezer

Ah well, I guess anything goes these days. I really like your poem about the animals and the Earth. It brings to mind, the days I could still roam about, just wandering through the woods and no specific purpose for being there. There were days that my best friend and I would get up real early and wake my boys; just to go for a hike. A chance to get out and just be. My sons learned early in life that there is beauty and life and death in the natural world. Finding dead animals or seeing baby birds. It was all interesting to them. You brought a bunch of days in the woods back to my head and I thank you. ~ Geez.

With the way this ends I could hardly call it western classic lol. Always happy to bring pleasant memories to somebody

Nice ring of Amergins poem "The Song of Amergin". Bravo! I love the unending ending!!!

Hi, Stan,
I agree that this seems more Western than Free Verse - especially since rhyme comes so naturally for you. The content and theme are wonderful, all my senses come alive reading this. Powerful ending.
Thank you!

I invented the form a few years ago. If you'd like a better example look up my poem. "widow's retreat"

Candlewitch

your well written poem, imagery rich, reminds me that we are all (all life) connected, thank you for this!
