JANUARY CONTEST

Another Year ("January Competition")

I think I heard the clock strike twelve.
First day of a new year another number to write.
I was going to write in Roman it seems it’s the same
MMXX what the hell 2020 will do as well.

I opened the back door kicked out the year before.
Took my time to let the new year in
I can’t move so fast, and it seemed insane
To welcome another year that’s just the same

Oh! shit they are letting off fireworks out there.
My dog has run into the bedroom screaming
I tripped over the mat, my eyes started streaming.
I am looking at the ceiling again, another thing to bear.

But after an hour of getting off the floor
This old guy is becoming trying, not just a bore
What are you moaning at now the wife screamed?
Nothing my dear you are having a bad dream.

The rest of the day many people heard on the phone
Have a happy new year my dear, they couldn’t have known.
Did you have a lovely party, I said I was as before
My resolution just faded away, as under my breath I swore.

Geezer

just another day. I like your take on getting rid of the old year to welcome a new one that is just as boring and same as the last. I feel the same. All that crap about starting a fresh, new year; "Bah, humbug!" Might just as well kept the old one. Nice job with the dog screaming because of the fireworks! ~ Gee.

Many thanks for your visit to this grumpy old farts piece lol
It is a tradition in lots of places to let the old year out the back and the new in the front but at Midnight.
Could be a resolution to do it sometime the next day at our age lol,
Thanks again it was fun, Yours as always Ian ..

S

Hope you are anticipating a good year 2020 the number has changed lol Thanks for your comment I have rectified the duplication I did notice it but was just lazy that's what comes of writing and posting within an hour .. Take care and our thoughts always , Yours Ian ..

yep as we get older it seems a new year doesn't seem that big of a deal lol

S

Many thanks for your visit, I was thinking with my memory as it is
I think I will stay in 2020 MMXX all the time
it is so easy to remember lol,
Take care my love to all your Kin, and good luck in the votes ,
Yours Ian

Gracy

Amusing quatrains about the new year. I had a good laugh. Also noticed that your first quatrain doesn't have end rhymes, whereas the rest do rhyme, tho' unevenly.
Poor dog, one of mine nearly died of a heart attack with the fireworks.
Still, I guess starting a new year means that we're still alive. I'm OK with that, hope you are as well.

Many thanks for your info, It is a shame that not so many entered the competition
I sent out a few Messages to our poets asking for them to write something for this comp..
Now I see February Comp is posted and being a short month well I will have to hurry
I hope you will write for the comp's this month.
Good to see new names and new critique offered,
I write these sometimes in about 20 minutes so they are streamed raw.
Once again thank you for your comment, Take care as always Yours Ian ..x

I just read this, I don't bother with new year. I liked your take on it. I also have a pooch that finds the loud bangs all too much. I made him a snood. When he wears it, he no longer becomes agitated and lays down to rest. You can make a snood out of an old sleeve or sock (depending on the size of the dog) I liked the humour in this and the frankness. I agree it's just another number. So is age

Take care and thanks for sharing

LG :)

Many thanks for leaving a comment on this one
I hope you are going to enter February's comp.
It is an excursion into another facet of your writing or just an extension to your own works.
If you need anything just shout up quietly.
The tradition of letting the old year out the back door and the new one in ASAP
Has been with us all my life and that's a little while, and I hear the second world war has ended since then
Thanks again, Yours Ian . x.
