Squirrels don't care about the rain
they still forage all around
and flick their tails as if insane
while planting acorns in the ground.
Squirrels pay no attention to the cold
as they lay on limbs to catch the sun
or dig stored nuts from the leaf mold.
Watching them can be great fun.
Squirrels do not have any fear
as they jump from tree to tree
or scold at foxes that come near
and even sometimes bark at me.
Squirrels give the future little thought
as they mate and run along some limb.
After giving it some thought
I'd do well to just Be just like them.

Very amusing,
maybe a little uneven, especially the last line, but not bad.

Hello
Thank you for dropping by. Yes the last few lines need some work and I'll edit this in time.......stan
Like it.
It's fun and entertaining. I'd leave off the last four lines. Doesn't need any meaning (which is what the last four lines says, anyway).
Hi Tater
All it was intended to be was a bit of fun so I'm pleased it was seen as such. That entire last stanza will eventually get revised. Appreciate the visit and input........stan
your poem
If you are not familiar with Mary Oliver, check her out on PoemHunter. She is Pulitzer prize winning, the most read American woman poet ever. At least a third of her poems are about animals/fish/birds/mammals/insects in which she profoundly connects their lives with hers and being human. They are both cute and profound. I do not think you intended to write a purely entertaining poem, but the connection is a bit obvious and cute. There is so much more you can do with this!
Oliver has had a big influence on a lot of poets on this site. "To borrow from another poet is compliment, the great writers steal ".
Your info says you don't read any contemporary poets- You are a contemporary poet! There's a lot to be found!
Hello
I had not heard of her but that's no surprise as I read very little contemporary poetry. And I'm aware that this poem needs a better ending and rest assured that although it might take a while I hope to improve on this little scribble............stan

Another venture into the wild.
Loved the watchful eye of the beholder..
Now if the Squirrel's flick their tales, does this mean they are changing their stories.
and flick their (tales) as if insane.
I will leave this to you to change, but I found a little joy in watching the Squirrel.
Take care young woodsman,
Yours Ian.
Oh I do go on so!
Hi Ian
I'd never thought of it but this unintentional misspell might be a good thing in that it could easily lead to another interpretation lol.............stan

Hi
I live not far from town. We have 3 bird feeders out and one is just outside our sliding glass door. I also keep corn scattered around. Not unusual to see 3-4 squirrels, 2-3 rabbits, 2 chipmunks and innumerable birds of different species all at one time lol. A nearby transformer station has had to install slick sheet metal on to of their 8 foot chain link fence to keep the squirrels out and keep them from causing outages when they get fried lol.......stan

I wonder what squirrel tastes like and are we disregarding an asset..
Did I just say that, must be the muddy side of me showing again,
Take care out there and know we love you all,
Yours Ian..
Squirrels
Are a dark meat. They have a rich taste similar to rabbit. But they must be pressure cooked before frying. Fried squirrel and gravy and biscuits are about as good as it gets.........stan

One thing in cooking Squirrels, we all know that squirrels bury their nuts so that's one thing we don't have to worry about ????
Have a great day, Yours Ian..
Yeah
In some areas you can only harvest male squirrels. They are small animals so determining their sex requires a special technique. If you see a squirrel and the tree it's in is small enough you just shake the tree and if you hear the squirrel's nuts rattling you can go ahead and shoot................that even made Me groan lmno
