At What Cost a Christian Chequebook

At What Cost a Christian Chequebook …

Doesn’t anyone find it disgustingly odd?
that a book meant for a saintly tomb.
Written by men who’re said to be of god,
is worth more than the fruit of the womb.

They say negotiations went incredibly well,
purchasing this book for nine million pounds.
I say they and the book should burn in hell,
I mean this is as stupid, as it bloody sounds.

Babies die of starvation, illness, and thirst,
while they’ll pass by this book and gawk.
Wouldn’t a real Christian put a baby’s life first,
then maybe in the footsteps of Jesus they’d walk.

I’m atheist, hardened by the acts of the human,
yes I have belongings and a family that I love.
But all that I am and have is from a woman,
though some still think it’s given from above.

Man as in the species has so many faults,
but covetous stupidity must rank so very tall.
Perhaps if we opened baby museums or vaults,
we would hold the fruit of the womb above all.

About This Poem

Last Few Words: I wrote this this evening in anger, after hearing on the news. Some stupid christian curator go on about how well negotiations went while purchasing an ancient book, that was meant for a saint's tomb. They paid nine million pounds for it, thank goodness the negotiations didn't falter or who knows the price we would have paid. I wonder how many lives that money could have saved, but heh we have a relic in a glass cage to stare at......

Thank you Lonnie, we may agrre to disagree. But what can't be disputed is that nine million pounds could have bought a lot of food or vaccines, that could have prevented suffering. Surely a Christian would see this as a better way to use the money. Regards Roscoe..

Although a Christian myself, I very seldom attend church. It is my opinion too much money given to religions of All kinds goes toward the aggrandisement of clerics instead of toward helping people which is what I believe any worthy God prefers. I think for a poem written in haste and anger this one is extremely well put together.........stan

I do not attack individual people for their brliefs, as i do not expect to be attacked for mine. But i do attack institutions for crass stupidity and an uncaring attitude. Thank you Stan, Regards Roscoe...

I am a Christian, but I do agree with what you are saying. More of us should rise up in protest over many injustices in this country created by Religions and the (blank) government. I am surprised that the American people have turned a blind eye to so much.

Thank you Linda, ( thank you Linda ) that reminds me of a song, as i've said above in my reply to Stan. I do not attack individual beliefs, but this just seems the limit. It was the way this person thought they'd done well getting the book for nine million pound, so sad this stupid world. Thanks again Love Roscoe...

The list is endless that you have picked out one item in millions of items that are not good for the whole, starving children, some dying of thirst and others of illness when an injection costing 5 cents would cure them.
The list is endless, the poem is good.
I gave a missionary hell once, when I was at the Samaritans, where I worked for a while, he was saying how he had made christians of some Black people in Africa. They took those people out of their forest (Their Mama and Papa) gave them ploughs and tractors made them cut their forest down to make fields where they could grow things.
The tractors ran out of fuel the ploughs rusted and the new christians died in their hundreds, probably praising their new God, So I crapped him out.
He couldn't understand why, makes me sick.
I watched the Holy Cow drink the last of my water, and eat the grain for my next meal, as the cramps in my stomach destroyed my life..
Another quick example of madness, Yours Ian.T
PS:- As USA we have starving children in our countries and homeless people by the dozens yet we walk on the Moon a supreme madness.

I know Ian, but i looked at this stupid book and thought what nine million pounds might have done. I saw this shortly after seeing an advert asking to help starving children. Thank you for your comments, and thank you for sharing your experiences helps knowing that others feel the anger i do. Regards Roscoe...

Obviously, I am not christian, by my name (you can assume) I was raised christian and rebelled against the hypocracy. I understand what you are saying. I agree that the money could have been put to MUCH better use. I have little respect for christianity because of its many abuses. Thank you for writing this highly significant poem!

always, Cat

A couple of lines feel a bit awkward in scansion but I don't feel like nit-picking, since it reads well overall.

One thing that struck me odd, the line-
I’m atheist, hardened by the acts of the human,

Atheism, to me includes a hard criticism of the idiocy of religion, but not a hardening of the individual, it is more often a sign of universal compassion in the individual.

Roscoe Lane

Thank you for your comments. I have been an athiest most of my adult life, and what i was trying to argue there was. If as religion states their god has so much compassion, why does he not spread it around. They the christains always jump in when someones had a lucky escape, and state god had been watching over them. My argument to them is Does this same god not watch over the child who dies from, hunger, thirst, murder and disease. And why don't they in richer countries ie, my country and America, vote for parties known to help big business, that exploits these conditions. Hope this helps. Regards Roscoe...

Oh how I agree how much I agree, the same goes for the other businesses of the world, like art, for instance, its the name that counts, never mind what the painting is, and one man/woman, owns a work at such a price as could give the whole world a better philosophy of life as you say. Why can we not stop to think, there seems to be no religion that is strong enough to change people, they still go through the same ritual of greed and use, not a thought for the consequences to this most wonderful environment we have on this planet. Sigh.
We live a charade, and are even taught to continue it, shame on humans who have the intelligence, if they would only use it.

Never had the joy of giving birth, but then I feel thereby I have done a little bit when the world is over-populated as it is. No holier than thou, I love children, chat with them every day.

Sigh! Good poem.
There will, however , be a number here who,
sitting comfortably in their cloaks of illusion feel themselves criticised here

But its the same thing with those who take drugs,
like smoking for instance, why we do anything so horrid as that "God" knows..

Nordic cloud.

Ann, thank you, and i totally agree. I believe there is more art in a childs laughter, than now hangs in all the damned walls in all the museums. Sorry for that bit of H Boggart. And as far as feeling criticised, if the cap then they must wear it. Thank you again Love Roscoe...
