A Wedding Toast - For August

You have embarked upon a new adventure
It will be a rough and rocky road.
But if you remember
Not to be selfish
Love each other, in good times and bad
Consider each others’ feelings
Be honest, straight and true
respect each other
Never take things for granted,
The road will smooth itself out.

Share each other
In all that you do.
Speak to each other
Listen to what your partner has to say
As communication is the greatest
Of all obstacles in your path.
Conquer it and your marriage
Will truly have been made in heaven.

When you are angry and unable to forgive
Remember your marriage vows
And let them be your guiding light.

About This Poem

Last Few Words: I wrote this for a young couple who had set themselves on a path of adventure. Carefree as newlyweds are, I thought that a wise viewpoint was needed to make their marriage successful. They have had a very successful 12 years now and they say that when things get rough the follow this toast.

a nice speech and toast...

but not a very engaging poem. Poetry is not about cliche words of wisdom.
