AS SEASONS TURN

With winter comes the final feasts
the ending of a worn out year
and seeing far through naked woods
breathing air that's cold and clear

but..........

Monochromatic soon grows old
too little color in the world
too many numbers in the power bill
late winter....season of death
......by now I like the winter less

At long last life returns with spring
pastels in 'most every shade
that first day of short sleeves
with luck worn on a fishing trip
all is well

Until...............

Comes first fire ants of the season
and initial wasp sting of the year
as woodland walks become less pleasant
thanks to chiggers and copper heads
and let's not forget evening's bane
.....by now I like the spring time less

Now the bounty of the summer
emerald green is all about
local peaches, tomatoes and water melons
the feel of wind on now bare legs
scanty summer fashions
and splashing through the cool lke water

Alas........

Lake water soon turns too warm
the sun begins to bleach the leaves
as warm turns into furnace hot
withering crops and lessening streams
and I toil in sweat soaked clothes
salty liquid burning my old eyes
.........by now I like the summer less

At last the first cool autumn breeze
and explosion of the foliage colors
as combines harvest farmers' bounty
and football finally begins
simultaneous with hunter orange
the month of ghosts and witches
the harvest ball
that first frost
an early snow fall
migrating calls of ducks and geese
rutting deer
a cool evening before the fire
with Susan

natural progression of the whole thing. Only a few little bobbles;easily fixed.

number should have an [s]
it should be [sleeves]
lega should be leg[s]
Great story though and well told.
You always keep my attention all the way through

Stan as usual you are the master of nature and its walks..
You sounded a little sad in this one as the seasons of life pass, yet there is such a beauty in the ages as they pass us by..
Initially would have loved Winters colours to be there to go with the next few Stanzas,

coppoer heads:-Did you mean.. The snake Copper head ???

Love the 6th century word that is still used
Chiggers:-
The term chigger is often confused with the term jigger,
The Chigoe flea. Trombiculidae live in the forests and grasslands and are also found in the vegetation of low, damp areas such as woodlands, berry bushes, orchards, along lakes and streams, and even in drier places where vegetation is low such as lawns, golf courses, and parks.
They are most numerous in early summer when grass, weeds and other vegetation are heaviest. In their larval stage they attach to various animals, including humans, and feed on skin, often causing itching.
These relatives of ticks are nearly microscopic measuring 0.4 mm (1/60 of an inch) and have a chrome-orange hue.
The (best known) species of chigger in Northern America[ is the hard-biting Trombicula alfreddugesi of the south-eastern United States and humid mid-west ;
Have an itch free day lol, Yours Ian.T

It may be hard to believebut I Do check this stuff over before posting. I guess my eyes see what Should be there instead of what Is lol. Those damned chiggers! Back when I used to pick wild blackberries those things would eat me up. Finally found an old time repellant. Wipe kerosene around ankles, waist and arms held them at bay. Now there's deep woods Off! but that doesn't do much for snakes and fire ants lol.
I meant for this to convey that there was little negative about autumn since that season was not accompanied by qualifiers........back to the drawing board I guess..................stan

The picture was great in this piece, and it conveyed to me that it was sometimes a good thing that Autumn was embraced and especially the last part..
How lucky you are that there is Susan to let you meander through the Autumn with probably a grand smile on your faces in hope that it lasts for ever, Yours Ian.T

I'm pleased that I Did get that across............stan

this was such an enjoyable read

i tripped a tiny bit at different times, but
i'm guessing gee and ian addressed those
hic-ups in their commentaries
(sorry, no time to read all)

i'm reading this on a winter's morning, dressed in
half my wardrobe; i was HANGING to get to the summer verse!

gentle, almost picturesque imagery in parts, took me on
a nice little journey here
i particularly liked the"autumn stanza

it seemed a very natural ending to the progression
of verse beforehand

your last 2 lines are just lovely

cheers

So good of you to pop onto my page. I'm always surprised when one of my rare open form poems goes well and I'm glad it brought some warmth to you on a cold winter day............stan
