There are rivers for each stage of life
as well as for every mood,
some run wild and full of strife
while others seem to slowly brood.
Like us they start with two joined parts
love for us and streams for them,
both begin with fits and starts
as if their births are a mere whim.
The rivers of my heart and home
spring from Blue Ridge mountain hollows
where they rush and laugh with foam,
their pools dimpled by evening swallows.
They wear bare the mountain's bones
with white rushes and water falls
and sing with bass and rumbling tones
where the blue grouse drums and calls.
Such were the rivers of my youth
when both my bones and will were strong,
well before I knew the truth
that decades are not really long.
The rush of waters and each year
slowed when the rivers reached the hills,
as falls end and waters clear
then slowly calm, losing their thrills.
This mix of both moves gently on,
a few mild rapids here and there,
whose songs barely stir the dawn
and become as scarce as non-gray hair.
Then as length and years grow long
we each become both wide and slow
and muted murmurs displace the song.
Neither one of us has far to go.
Now in sight : our destination,
eternity and boundless sea,
both bearing that last fascination.
On reaching them what will we be?

As usual well written, a life's journey this time though,
I wrote a similar one a while back,
it is a good reference point to have a river from its birth to its destination of the ocean.
I had mine drop all its troubles on the sand as it reached out for the sea/ocean, good to read another way of writing it.
Just the one typo:-
The rivers of my heart and home
spring fro Blue Ridge mountain hollows (From)
Take care out there, and live in the love of each other,
Yours Ian.T
hello
Imagine that, ME making a typo lol. I guess there are a limited number of subjects to write about so I'm glad to find myself in good company is this metaphor. I wrote this one a while back after watching the movie "A river runs through it". Thanks for taking the time to peruse this poem.............stan
Hello Stan
I liked the title, it gives something for the reader to think and, at the same time, it left me trying to predict how could there be a connection between the two, Men an Rivers.
I thought the pace is good at most parts of the piece and the rhymes makes it a delightful read. (imo)
Hi
Thank you. I'll likely keep picking at this (as I do all my stuff lol) but it's good to know that I at least have something decent to start from. Appreciate your dropping by..........stan
