Towards his home, in triumph, Jephthah strode:
with faith and pride a soldier's broad heart leapt.
His daughter sprang with love that overflowed
-- played timbrels as she danced: her father wept.
He ripped his clothes, then dropping to his knees:
" Why did I have to volunteer that oath?"
"My daddy, don't be sad, I beg you please
-- your promise to Jehovah binds us both."
For victory He'd vowed as sacrifice,
the first thing of his household through the gate.
He made the deal but she must pay the price:
endlessly prescribed a virgin's state.
Before you strike a bargain, weigh your skill,
especially when another pays the bill.

Good advice
I have done exactly as you suggested.
Like the story
I might not have a full back ground, yet a well written sonnet is always a joy to read and this is no exception.
The couplet is a great lesson too.
Appreciate the effort Keith.
