Halloween and monsters
I've loved them all my life
Throughout my seven decades
Ask my friends and ask my wife
I'd dress up for the evening
Give out candy to the ghouls
The super-heroes dressed in tights
Villains and Joker-fools
I'd make up myself real scary
Like a vampire or a fiend
Lots of blood and gore
Make the little kiddies scream
It used to give me pleasure
To see the children cry
Then shower them with goodies
Wipe the teardrops from their eyes
But now, I just sit watching
From my darkened door
I don't have the heart for fooling
It's not much fun, no more
I think about some little kids
Long ago and far away
When it was alright to scare them
When it was just play
You can't scare them anymore
People think it's rude
And falling off your stairway
Could get you arrested; sued
So, I sit and watch the children
Go by in all their glory
Wishing for the old days
When the monsters were just a story

Hi Gee
Around here there is only scattered areas where the old time trick or treating still goes on. They have substituted "trunk or treating" and halloween parties. As A child I recall being turned loose and staying out until almost midnight.......sigh. I enjoyed your poem but for last line and perfect rhyme try "When monsters were just a story" and see if you like it. Went deer hunting this evening and saw 3 does and one 5 point buck. I let them walk away hoping for a bigger one lol.
Me too...
My mom used to send us out, [with me in charge of my two sisters] and a bunch of neighborhood kids; we would all go together and hit the immediate neighborhood and then depending on how we did, the better parts of town. Yeah, the good old days! Glad to hear that you're still able to hunt and I hope that you get a nice, big, fat deer this season. Been ages since I've had any venison. Hope that maybe I'll have some kind hearted friend that will gift me with some. [I'll have to make some calls
and find out who is going]. Thanks for stopping by, ~ Gee.
