FAREWELL OLD FRIEND (August contest)

The end of summer has come nigh
as has come the end of you
so I dig here in the August heat
and think about our past.

We have shared so many times
in forests even beside lakes
many of which inspired me
to write a line or two of verse.

So the spade takes yet another bite
into dry and hard red soil.
How deep will be deep enough
to assure you stay at rest?

I remember when we first met
in a sporting goods store.
It was an almost instant fit.
And we meshed for all these years
on quests in almost any weather.

I'd call on you on every hunt;
many a deer we dragged from woods
many a morn we'd fight the cold
many a rainy day wet us.
Those days are over now.

For time finally caught you up
just as it has nearly caught me.
.........................
The hole complete it's fare well time.
There is little left to say
just bid goodbye to one held dear.
And pat the dirt back in the grave.
Then buy another pair of boots to replace you.

Couldn't you have put some cardboard inside your trusty boots to make them last a few more years.
But I suppose it would mean jumping puddles and we both know neither of us can jump anymore LOL,
Great write there young woodsman,
Yours as always, Ian..

S

They were beyond repair. Even shoe goo would not hold them together lol. As to jumping, I recall high school days and broad jumping about 18 feet and high jumping 5'-6". Now it's all I can do to jump out of recliner when Susan says supper is ready lmao.........stan

a fitting farewell to an old pair of boots. I've never buried a pair, but...I have had a few that I probably should have! I enjoyed this a lot! Makes me want to go find those old boots that I got rid of and give them a proper burial. I already put my last winter boots out with the trash and now; here you go making me feel bad about it! LOL ~ Gee

S

gives me fits about hanging onto old shoes as well as boots. But she holds onto something old too.....Me lol............stan

I hVe a pair of leather boots peeling and look sad. But I love those boot they are so comfortable. But they look to bad to wear out in public. They look so sad they need a proper burial. Lol

S

looks really mattered I'd be alone lol. Boots don't get really comfortable until they start looking half worn out..........kinda like men lol.......stan
