I thought I'd call the other day
even reached and hit the number
then as the phone let dial tone play
I realized he'd reached his final slumber.
I had stood there in the funeral home
with flag draped coffin in plain view
hearing different people tell his tome.
The best friend that I ever knew.
They read a poem that I'd penned,
sang some songs and said a prayer.
None of it mattered in the end
for he was no longer there.
So here I am with pen in hand
and another cavern in my soul
thinking of a friendship grand
and how age adds to losses' toll.
These words amount to near nothing.
I know this as I scribble them,
as I shed a tear which memories bring
of all the good times shared with him.

said Stan, I'm sorry for your loss. It's nearly 3 years since I lost
my best friend and the pain is still very real. We have our memories
and those will have to suffice. Your poem is a wonderful tribute.
Than you
The loss will be there every time I set foot in the many woods we'd hunted
I appreciate
your kind words
This is...
I hesitate to use the word... [beautiful]. I am saddened by the need for such a great poem. I am sorry for your loss.
I couldn't find one little bitty thing to find fault with. Yes, as we get older, we find that our friends have dropped away from this earthly plane and we are left more and more alone. I'm doing a good job of outlasting all my friends in my age group. I guess that is why I keep making friends younger than myself. Hopefully, there will be someone left to mourn me when it is my turn.
Keep trucking Stan, it's the only way to go; pedal to the metal and drive it like you stole it. ~ Gee.

Hi Geeze
How could anybody really believe they'd be referred to as "old man------fill in the blank"? This loss is as if I'd lost my brother again

Hi Raj
I am pleased the emotion comes through but had hoped to never write this. Thanks for dropping by
Dear Stan, so sorry for your
Dear Stan, so sorry for your great loss. My condolences to you and all family and friends. Your poem brings tears to my eyes, It's such a sincere tribute and I'm glad somebody read one of your poems at the funeral service.
Yes, few friends and family are left as we grow older. Even when we're young, as in my case, as you well know. I'd imagined a large family, but it was not to be.
I have no nits at all. The rhyming is perfect and so is the imagery.
Did your friend die recently, is the pain raw? So sad...but writing poetry is the best therapy. Peace, my friend, Gracy
Hi Grace
Yes it happened just a week or so ago. You'd think we'd get used to it but each time I feel more hollow
