Changing Times

Changing Times

Suitable placards are not to be found
carried by those who protest
Hippie and Flower Child far underground
no longer aiding the quest

militant factions now cry their demands
while terrorists lurk in the wings
neither are certain who really commands
but both have formidable stings

gone are the days of the sit-ins for peace
gone are the love-ins for change
now there is hatred that screams for release
from politics furtive and strange

AK’s and Glocks are the tools of the day
wielded by bullies and fools
strumming guitars is no longer the way
to go about changing the rules

the method is madness, the outcome insane,
participants dying by choice
innocent bystanders harvest the pain
politicos snidely rejoice

we’ve met with our enemy and it is us
it seems we’ve learned nothing at all
from days when minorities conquered the bus
til now, when our empires fall

A grand write, I do so miss the love ins, and the communes, though only the former was attended in my own bedroom, with my then wife lol
Take care young traveller, know we think of you both out there.

The times have indeed changed. Too many fought against the establishment then became anxious to Become the establishment. And right and wrong has devolved into situational ethics. Thoughtful poem.....stan

this one really made me think. first of all, the pattern is tight. and secondly the content brings up a really good point: are we really going about protest the right way? it seems the difference is that now there are few who would wield the weapons in the midst of those who sit in peace. I like to believe the majority only wants peaceful change. thank you for this, it really made me wonder.

The days of the Bob Dylan type protest songs are indeed long gone. I miss those days, ( sigh )! But, what the Hell, we have to evolve somehow I suppose, I just wish we'd learn how to deal with our problems a little better! LOL!! Thanks for the feedback!
