There are those among us who use imagery in their poetry in a manner which seems almost automatic. But most of us have to work at it. A poem without imagery is like listening to an accountant reading off a profit and loss statement. The right amount of imagery is like going to a good play with talented actors and good background props. Too much imagery is like going to the same play but having continual fireworks exploding on stage.
I'm considering running a workshop soon on the fine line between not enough imagery and too much imagery. Most of ya'll know I'm not educated in poetry so this shop won't be loaded with technical terms and it will be a two way street in which we will all explore the razor edge of imagery. I'll just be there to move things along once we get started. Anybody interested?...............stan
sounds interesting
if you teach me how to use the details of things to extend my imagery, I'd be grateful.
I'm dying to learn how to do it.
Hi Rula
I haven't gotten a syllabus together yet. I'm going to try my best to avoid the mistakes which lead to the failure of my last shop so I'm going to take my time in organizing this one. And you are already well on your way to using imagery merely by recognizing that the imagery lies in the details.............stan
Stan
You are being humble by saying you are not educated...i don't think that barring a few like Wesley most of us are not formally educated in poetry...yet you are almost a a master at creating the right imagery as has been seen often in your posts...I would definitely like to learn that ...so you can count me in as a student...
Regards,
Hi Raj
What little education I have in poetry has been gained here in the last few years. There Are those on site who have taken formal courses and even have degrees in poetry. I just struggle along trying to get better and sharing what little I know with others. I'll announce the syllabus next week or the week after. I would be pleased to have you as a fellow student.............stan
Thanks Stan
It would be my pleasure and privilege to be enrolled in your workshop
Regards,
Stan
It would be a pleasure to input to this etheric place where words flow past our eyes.
Not withstanding the train of thoughts awaiting at the various Stations throughout the world.
I would love to have an old agers pass so that I may join this sojourn at the earliest time, lol.
Yours Ian.T, Sparrow, Yenti, and all the children gathered here...????
.
PS:- Do you know when the first train is due ??
hi Ian
When I get it organized it will be good to have a fellow oldster along for the ride lol................stan
I am definitely
Interested in such a workshop! I tend to use imagery frequently and could use some guidance as to what is too much, too little and just enough and how to find tune those images so they make sense.
hi Carrie
I suspect the line between too much and not enough is a bit subjective. But we'll try to at least define what is way too much lol..........stan
Sounds
good, let me know when we are ready to begin. I now have children that go to bed at a reasonable hour and sleep all night so I have a little more "free time."
thanks
I'm taking my time and being careful putting syllabus together so that this shop won't fail as my last one did. But I expect to get my ducks in a row by end of next week..............stan
yes! count me in, please!
that's the part which I need to work on! When can we begin?
Alid
Hi Alid
I posted this blog mainly to see if anybody would be interested in another imagery shop by me. I've been pleasantly surprised by the response. When you see me post a blog stating the syllabus for this shop is ready there will be a couple of day's wait for folks to sign up and we will then begin. I will be glad to sign you up as soon as syllabus is completed...........stan
yes, sir
thank you, sir!
Alid
Thank
You for wanting in.........stan
I would love to bring my two cents
and hope for some change in return. Unlike you Stan, I struggle with imagery. Given time and effort I can make it work for me, but it does take time and effort... like working all year to get to the Super Bowl so you can get your ass kicked... see, that's about the best I can do. If I have a story to tell it comes more easily, but in a small poem I lack the ability.
hi Wes
You don't deal in small change. Every time you get involved in something you bring dollars of knowledge. I hope you can get as much out of my shop as I did yours...........stan
I am confident I shall.
And thank you for bolstering my ego. It's a little battered right now.
HEY!
I don't make a habit of doling out false praise. That shop was great..............stan
I am keen!
You can peruse what I've posted already to decided whether I'm walking that fine line or not : )
hello
What you have already written should not matter in this shop. There will be more discussion and thinking in the shop than writing and at least part of what writing there is will be standardized to an extent..............stan
sounds like a ripper, mate
looking forward to it.
syllabus now on line.
I am in process of listing everybody who has requested to participate in this blog to official participant's list. If you have had a change of mind just holler and if you're still on board please read the syllabus and feel free to ask questions if you have them. Welcome aboard.............stan
