Closer to Home

We all do our small part
to make things better
for ourselves

And sometimes others
notice the differences
and make their own
adjustments

I've been buying
almost all
of my vegetables
from friends
and farmers markets

A friend explained
the concept
of food miles
and I have consumed
along those lines
for alot of years now

Except for tea
and olive oil,
one has to support
the farmers of far off
enterprises also

Greek olive oil
Indian black tea
Minnesota farm raised
beef, eggs, potatoes and chicken
and all the garden tomatoes
I can choke down
in the summer

And it's really more
fun to drive out
to the Mennonite farmstead
on a chilly fall day
to pick up a freshly
killed side of pork
and cut it up myself
and grind my own sausage
from the trimmings

I don't mind the extra work
and I don't mind getting
my hands dirty,
but I'll let someone else
enjoy the raising and
the growing
they're doing
their part also

Found this at the bottom of the pile here in "Undiscovered works"
The theme is OK now you must put it to poetry.
At the moment it reads as a diary entry with suggestions thrown in.
Needs a rythme and rhyme you have all the information now let it sing, Yours Ian.T
