Encouraged to Lie

This is a day
Of both laughter and tears,
A day that plays on your
High hopes
And deep fears

A day set apart
For your neighbors and friends,
It’s not Opposite Day
But a day we pretend

That we purchased a yacht
For that trip to Cancun,
That we saw Donald Trump
In a hot air balloon

Where we get spinach bagels
And call them donuts,
Say we’re off to the golf course
But then stop at putt-putt

There’s no other day
That we’re encouraged to lie,
No other day
To make someone cry

With comments about
Handsome gentleman callers,
How you picked the right numbers
And won 9 million dollars

It’s all in the way
We play on expectation,
And the courage to flirt with
Our own damnation

But all of the hurt and surprise
Is dispersed,
With a little reminder
That it’s April 1st
