Susan and I walk hand in hand
both of us with bloody cough
through a dead and dying land;
trees with green leaves dropping off.
Wildlife carcasses are scattered
turkeys, crows, squirrels, deer.
The beauty of my world is shattered.
I'm losing all that I held dear.
All those cussed mushroom clouds,
mere memories of a week ago.
Grey , hot dust settles like a shroud.
At nightfall distant craters glow.
No way to know who started it.
Korea? Russia? Was it us?
Communications turned to shit.
It does little good to cuss.
Susan stumbles next to me.
I turn and catch her in week arms.
How could this have come to be?
I promised to shield her from all harms.
We both sit unsteadily.
We know our end is very near.
a springtime leaf falls from a tree.
Susan's breath stops...........

I lurch awake in deep of night
in a bed now soaked in sweat
Susan is snoring, all is right.
We haven't made that mistake.....yet

I don't think, and I certainly hope that even the most unsophisticated politician/tyrant is aware that if they start a nuclear war, that there will be nothing of value to rule over. But both our countries are lufkin in that our mere size makes it impossible to destroy us with just a couple of bombs and NK would be laid total waste if it tried.

any of these types of thing since they were popular in the sixties. I am old enough to remember when Kennedy pushed Khrushchev over the Cuban missile crisis. He had his missiles in vassal states near the Russian border but the idea that the Soviets might have the same ability gave him kittens.

That's a great way to describe a nightmare. You had me from beginning to end. I used to dream about "mushroom" clouds. Used to scare the crap out of me!
I was a child in Memphis during the Cuban missile crises.
Memphis was a level one target for nukes then. To this day I clearly recall atom bomb drill in school (hiding under desks)
Yeah, I remember...
those days! Schenectady being a level one too, because of General Electric headquarters being not more than a few blocks from where I lived. I doubt that hiding under a desk would have been sufficient to keep us alive and even if we did survive, there would be nothing to go back to. Maybe someday, the world's leaders will be smart enough to understand, that nuclear war, would mean the end of everything, and get rid of all of them. ~ Geez.

Trump paved the way for Putin to attack the Ukraine. Trump should have done a lot of things he didn't and not done a lot that he did. Putin is a crazy man hot for power and requires special handling or death...yeah, death would work.

Those desk drills were obviously meant to give a false sense of
security. And blaming Trump for the current mess is misguided. The invasion of Georgia was not under Trump. The invasion of Crimea was not under Trump. This invasion is not under Trump. All the russian aggressions took place under leaders who projected weakness.
